a glance what might be spread over ten pages in a book…” – from the novel Fathers and Sons by Ivan S. Turgenev, 1862. A simple drawing will quite often&nbsp;promote better understanding of a subject than words are able. Instructional Drawings is a collection of paintings derived from small diagrams used to facilitate teaching with students at the Victorian College of the Arts (VCA). In Instructional Drawings, these sketches that were once tools to engender comprehension become&nbsp;catalysts&nbsp;to&nbsp;drive invention. The&nbsp;structures and systems each drawing once represented is adopted as a departure point for these paintings. The&nbsp;accepted modes of reading are now challenged, while the&nbsp;irrational and irregular are favoured over the&nbsp;familiar&nbsp;and mathematical. Compelled by a desire to create new architectures, Instructional Drawings embraces unexpected forms to&nbsp;motivate&nbsp;exploration into&nbsp;preconceived approaches to composition and investigation of rich metaphors and illusions inspired by the iconic track of the same name by American musical duo, The Books. Since its release in 2005, the song’s subtext has been widely debated and its definitive meaning continues to challenge audiences. The song writing delivers an engaging interplay and powerfully catalogues and combines fragments of language into a synthesised whole. This concept of coalescing the discordant is compelling and currently drives investigations in my practice. Smells Like Content is a continuation of my exploration into the visual language of abstraction. Filled with analogies, rhythms and metaphors, this exhibition of new paintings presents discoveries that celebrate the accuracy of geometry; and the imprecision of human expression. <img width="1200" The Garden: a place of industry, productivity, growth and decay; a source of jubilant victory and inevitable loss. Drawing an analogous connection between two great labors; Gardening at Night is a series of abstract paintings that evidence a profound attachment to process. The works demonstrate the commitment to propagating new directions; appearance and disappearance exist beyond the depicted, responses are triggered then refined and surfaces are fastidiously worked to exalt the minutiae. The resulting works are a culmination of judicious observations and reactions by the artist in pursuit of a finished state that strikes a balance between harmony and dissonance. Apperception: the assimilation and interpretation of newly observed qualities by relying on past experience to formulate an understanding. ‘A breath of wind on a plastic petal in a cemetery, a riot of colour along a heavily graffitied corrugated fence, faded remnants of advertising on bluestone architecture, a display of potted plants on a blonde brick porch’. After over 10 years of living in the same house, a move to an unfamiliar northern Melbourne suburb creates a heightened sense of awareness. Romance Bloody Romance is a body of work that examines the relationships we make with landscapes. Filled with analogies, rhythms and metaphors, this autobiography of abstract paintings is driven by discoveries made over the passage of time. It investigates responses to the aesthetics of unknown surroundings; in seeing things for the first time, in the psychology of a new moment. These paintings archive a moment in time; when things happen, when things come right and exude a sense of balance and vitality. Said poetically by Kandinsky &nbsp; ‘Every form is a puff of smoke, the slightest breath will alter it completely.’ Detached from the world of objects, Romance Bloody Romance presents, in its own language, a place where the cognitive functions of habituation and apperception work in unison; in alliance. Here they support and conspire together in an effort to make what is new, old, what is different, common and what is revealed, exposed. In 2014, he returned to undertake a three-month residency at The Spinnerei in Leipzig, Germany supported by The Australia Council and Creative Victoria (formerly Arts Victoria). This extended stay permitted time to explore and absorb German culture and sparked new lines of inquiry in his practice. This exhibition presents works created as part of the Leipzig series alongside new works produced more recently in Melbourne. Together they reflect how the experience of this important cultural exchange has been filtered to find a new emergence in the artist’s work. Leipzig Created in a self-contained warehouse studio in downtown Leipzig, these paintings reveal an exploration of new surroundings and depict the sights and sounds of ‘the city with no limits’. Employing a process that invents its own possibilities, Munce’s paintings are initiated by a series of false starts. In these works, evidence of misplaced hopes and unfulfilled promises create an aggregation of forms that stimulate further investigation. Melbourne The distance created by moving back to Australia has given Munce a shift in focus from the macro to the micro. His study of German cultural periods and the interweaving of aesthetic principals between art, architecture and design, driven by artists associated with the Bauhaus, has led to a creative transference. Moving away from a process of spontaneity and chance, this new series reflects a demand for precision and strives towards an elementary harmony of surface, colour and shape.
