LEIPZIG INTERNATIONAL ART PROGRAM

JULY 11 - AUG 6, 2014. LIAP, SPINNEREI, HALLE 18, 2. STOCK, LEIPZIG

This series of works was the culmination of an intensive three-month residency in the Leipzig International Art Programme (LIAP) at the Spinnerei, a vibrant, creative arts hub in the German city of Leipzig.

After visiting Germany on a travelling scholarship in 2011, Munce developed a deep interest in the history, art, architecture and people of Germany, specifically Leipzig. This extended stay in 2014 permitted him the time to explore and absorb the city and its surrounds.

Exhibited at the LIAP summer show, these carefully crafted paintings reflect by the sights, sounds and stimulations of the studio over the days and nights of the residency. These observations evolve through an amalgamation of gestures, where disparate elements stabilise into a unified whole.

36 Colours Mixed in Leipzig one of over twenty paintings created during the Leipzig residency. This work created imaginary scenarios for the inhabitants of the studios opposite in Halle 18. It is a 1/3 scale replica of the 36 paned studio window where each glass pane is coloured with specific reference to the studio surroundings.

On the Kanal, a small painting refers directly to explorations of Karl-Heine-Kanal.

Residency supported by The Australia Council and Creative Victoria.
